Description

XV - The Devil

From the Tarot. The Devil, referring to the inner desires in us all --sex, drugs, greed, jealousy, and any other "sinful" ambitions is not a terribly difficult card to read. In many cases when I've drawn the card it signified a distorted view of reality, lack of wisdom in or losing grasp of what truly matters in life, and obsession over materialistic possessions.

Something original from me? Why yes. This was very painful yet fun to draw, took several days, done with a mouse. I introduce to you two new characters of mine: Shannon on the left, and De on the right. And here is a little story to go along with the drawing.

"Tell me what is wrong with me."

De looked up from a hollow skull nestled near his breast when the droning voice echoed through the gaudy chamber fit enough for a King, then responded with a similar tone.
"What is this? Again? Every day you come to me with the same request. When ever will you be satisfied, Shannon?"
De did not mind pointing out Shannon's flaws. In fact, he enjoyed it very much seeing as it was a more diverse pastime of his. Collecting skulls and teeth was thrilling, but terribly predictable after all. However, as days, weeks, and cycles passed, De found it more and more difficult to give the other boy instruction.

"The first day you came to me, you hadn't even a garment on your back. I told you to have a fine silk costume made."
"As I did," Shannon replied instantaneously.
"The next day you came to me, you wore a fine silk costume, but still you looked too ordinary. I told you to find some gold and decorate yourself with it accordingly."
"As I did", Shannon replied without emotion.
"The next day after the last day you came to me, you were dressed in silk and golden chains, but you had gotten fat from overindulging in an earthly feast. I told you to disgorge such things when ever control was lost."
"As I did," Shannon replied devotedly.
"The next day after several days you came to me, you were dressed and decorated well, were not too fat nor thin, but your mane was looking rather frail and ugly. I told you to tear every strand from your head and replace it with only the most beautiful hair you could find."
"As I did."Shannon's abiding response never failed to come.
Again and again, examples were provided by De. And each time Shannon's reply was the same. No matter what De told him to do, he would obey him. Even if that meant he had to lie or steal or tear out his hair and sew in the locks of De's kill as replacement.

"I suppose no matter what I say, you shall always come to me this way and ask me what is wrong, and I will always tell you."
Shannon could not comprehend the reason behind the wiser creature's dawdling, but nodded along as if he did.
"Well then," sighed De. "I will tell you what is wrong with you, just as I have cycle after cycle."
A pause came, as it usually did, but this time is was far more stretched. Curiosity welled up in Shannon's artificial eyes as he carefully watched the other pace to and fro, hollow skull still in hand. Then finally, the silence was pierced by De's commanding voice.
"Nothing." De turned to the apparently perfect lamb with absolute confidence in his answer. Shannon knew no way to react to De's command, for it was not a command at all.
"Just do what you wish. There is nothing more I dislike of you. There is nothing more I want of you. You are free now--begone," De concluded with a dismissive wave.
Shannon, for perhaps the first time since meeting De, began to worry. For he knew nothing more than to follow orders... and now, De was saying that he was "free"? At his own will, he could leave, change, and do as he himself wanted? It all seemed as if his greatest hope had come true; no longer did he have to be a mindless doll driven by temptation and sin--the Devil was setting him free.

"No." Shannon spoke with a glint in his eye that De had not seen before. "I was always free. This is where I want to be."

I adore De's eyes and mouth.

And Shannon's expression.

And the story that went along just made it even more amazing.
Damn you for having talent in writing and drawing. Damn you.

Only thing I'd say is have Shannon look a little less chick-like, but whatever.

'Tis still good.
